Where to Eat

Sámara has numerous inexpensive sodas, and most of the hotels have their own restaurants. El Ancla ( 2656-0716), located a bit south of downtown, serves up good, simple meals, with an excellent view of the beach and waves.

El Lagarto STEAK/GRILL A massive fire churns out a stream of hot wood-burning coals to feed the large, long barbeque grill stations at this restaurant and bar. Tables are made from massive heavy planks and the food is served on huge, crosscut blocks of wood, which adds to the rustic vibe. Grilled grass-fed and aged meats, seafood, and organic veggies are the heart of the long menu here.

Gusto Beach ITALIAN/BISTRO This simple, Italian-run restaurant is basically a beachfront trattoria—and then some. It’s also a beach club, where people rent chaise longues to hang for the day, playing volleyball, and catching rays. Food choices range from pastas, panini, and thin-crust pizzas to sushi, sashimi, and curries. Presentations can be creative, like the crisp pan-fried potatoes served in the cooking pan, or the fresh gelato made and served in a mason jar and topped with shaved chocolate. At night, this becomes nightlife central, with live music or DJs.

Entertainment & Nightlife

After dark the most happening place in town is Bar Arriba , a second-floor affair with a contemporary vibe a couple of blocks inland from the beach on the main road into town. Nearby, there’s Microbar Sámara ( 8784-7467), a cutesy pub with craft beer. You might also check out what’s going on at Gusto Beach (see above), La Vela Latina ( 2656-2286), or Tabanuco ( 2656-1056), all on the beach or fronting the water, right near the center of the action, on the main road running parallel to the beach off the center of town.
